Dead Rat Orchestra – Tyburnia… new dates added
For over 700 years there was a site of execution at Tyburn in London, where those who fell foul of political, religious and judicial reforms were executed for public entertainment and instruction.
Director James Holcombe’s film Tyburnia explores the parallels between contemporary and historical notions of crime in relation to business and property, the spectacular nature of punishment, and the state’s use of the body as a site for political control.
Dead Rat Orchestra will be performing the soundtrack live, to accompanying screenings at or near sites of public executions across the UK. The set will feature songs performed in the thieves’ cant (the secret language of Elizabethan rogues, coney-catchers and gull-gropers) as well as broadside ballads composed by or for those condemned to dance the Tyburn jig.
