Dead Rat Orchestra and Polish folk trio Sutari bonded over a shared love of making music with kitchen utensils. In July of this year, the two bands toured the UK and Dead Rat Orchestra presented Sutari with a tuned meat cleaver, forged for them in Cornwall by a swordsmith named Merlin (or Neil to his friends). Dead Rat Nathan made a programme about the casting of the cleaver for BBC Radio 4, in which he talks meat cleavers and marrow bones with Jeremy Barlow (author of The Enraged Musician), leads an orchestra of blacksmiths from a bandstand in Bath and delves into the Rough Music of rural Suffolk with his potty-mouthed dad Pete.
