15 years ago today, Dead Rat Orchestra played their first gig, at Colchester Arts Centre, supporting Montreal-based duo Hanged Up (Constellation Records). Unhurried by the audience’s expectations of entertainment, the trio created a 40-minute improvised piece with swelling waves of harmonic distortion, unearthly insectoid chittering and metallic glissandi, rhythmically underpinned by loosely-interlocking loops and glitching music boxes. To understate the obvious: the performance provided little evidence of the group’s future interest in traditional folk music.

On the 15th anniversary of that first performance, we painstakingly remastered the audio track for inclusion in the forthcoming Hopewell Sound 4-CD box-set, which will be available this summer. More news soon.
