Scraps 2 – The Gathered Flecks of Hope and Sorrow
Limited edition reissue of Nathaniel Mann's 2012 compilation of early material, including five specially-commissioned studio tracks and an Mbira song set recorded by Sherry Ostapovitch, soundtrack material from his work with director Mike Day, live tracks recorded by Peter Memmer at Asociación Cultural Mediodía Chica in Madrid, and selected demos from Nathan's personal archive.
This edition is housed in a saddled-stitched 150mm x 150mm replica of the original 24-page booklet, printed on heavy duty, uncoated 240 gsm paper and featuring lyrics, songs notes and images of nine cryptic discs to contemplate while listening.
Limited to 35 copies.
In musical circles, Nathaniel Robin Mann is still perhaps best known for charting the outer reaches of avant-folk as one third of the Dead Rat Orchestra. He has, however, been writing and performing as a solo artist for several years, drawing influences from the European and American folk traditions and tipping his hat along the way to everyone from Jacques Brel to Saul Williams, Mike Waterson to Nina Simone.
In 2012, Mann released his first solo collection on antigen records – an art-book and CD of musical sketches, outtakes, live songs and soundtrack material selected by the label from his personal archive.
Featuring a curious collection of instruments and objects for accompaniment and percussion (phonofiddle, harmonium, ukulele and ankle-bells), the collection includes stark folk ballads, North American spirituals and Spanish work songs arranged for voice, meat cleaver and wooden log.
