Exploring the traditions of Polish folk music, Sutari is a trio of singers, instrumentalists and performers, each from different musical and theatrical backgrounds. Zofia Bara?ska, Katarzyna Kapela, and Barbara Songin use a mixture of traditional instruments (violin, basetla and drum) and everyday objects (hand mixer, grater, bottles and a wrench) to explore their potential as musical devices.
The trio share a fascination with Lithuanian and Polish polyphonic songs sung mainly by women – sutartines. Providing the inspiration for their name, it means to be in concordance or agreement. Together, they delve into deep vocal harmony traditions, searching for the essence and hidden character of the songs, and exploring themes of femininity in folklore.
Basia Songin: “We talk about what was important for our ancestors a hundred, two hundred years ago. About girls who would comply with their parents’ wishes, about sadness, the unfairness of one’s fate, about first love or heartbreak. Polish songs are all about what we seek in life, therefore we tell our own stories too. The audience at our concerts, understands these seemingly archaic lyrics, and catches the irony and humour infallibly.”
Sutari have released two albums, Wiano (Bride Price) and Osty (Thistle), as well as a split 7″ with Dead Rat Orchestra. In 2018, they jointly headlined the Free Folk in Brexit Britain tour with Dead Rat Orchestra.
