Bio
Fayrouz Kaddal is a classically-trained flautist, researcher and academic from Alexandria, with a special interest in the relationship between musical practices and the Nubian displacement of 1964. She has performed as a member of High Dam and AfriCairo. Daniel Merrill is one third of free-folk radicals Dead Rat Orchestra, with whom he has been exploring the outer limits of traditional music for over a decade. He is now based in Egypt and the UK.
As KaddalMerrill, they explore ideas of culture, identity and place; vividly imagining new folk melodies over the poly-rhythmic drum grooves of Sudanese dance music. Together, they combine flute and violin, using extended techniques to weave a tapestry of sound that illustrates the shared joy they have found in exploring the richness and breadth of the Nubian, oriental and British musical traditions.
