Recorded live by Simon Loynes in the unique acoustic environment of St. Martin’s Church in Colchester, England on 29th July 2004. St Martins is the result of a week spent creating a musical performance space in the semi-derelict Norman nave of the church. Featuring copperplate records, bird song, celeste, drainage grating, suitcase drumming and salvaged organ pipes, the recording captures the group at a critical juncture in their creative development and features one of the earliest live takes of Guga Hunters of Ness opening track, Joy/Sorrow. This is the Dead Rat Orchestra’s second live document and was originally released by Palimpsest Records in 2004. It is long out of print and has become a highly sought-after collector’s item.
St Martins has been reissued as a limited edition glass-mastered CD in a reverse cardstock wallet, as part of a programme to make the Dead Rat Orchestra back-catalogue more widely available to a new audience. This CD is also available as part of the special offer Hopewell Sound Recordings three CD bundle.
